Gangavathi is a town and a municipal council in Koppal district in the state of Karnataka, India.
Gangavathi, before independence was under the Nizam state and after Independence and reorganization of states, it became part of Raichur district in Karnataka State. Formerly known as Neelavati, Gangavathi was the centre for development activities in agricultural sector and was rightly called as the Rice Bowl of Karntaka Gangavathi is located in the newly formed Koppal District of Karnataka State. It is surrounded by KhisKinde(Anegundi), Hampi and Tungabhadra Dam.The City is Taluk head Quarter located at 43Km from Koppal and 350Km from Bangalore the State Head Quarter. The near Raiway Station is Hospet about 40km from Gangavathi City. The Eminent historical City of Hampi is only at 13km from Gangavathi city attracting large numbers of tourists. After construction of Tungabhadra Dam at Munirabad about 40km from City the agricultural, production of area increased rapidly. Specialy, production of Paddy, Sugar cane, Banana, Ground nuts, Cottons etc., this city is the leading producer of rice in Karnataka.There about 30 to 40 rice mills nd 70 small- Scale industries, 50 to 60% are flour ills,cotten ginning mills,spinning mil etc., are the major industries located in Gangavathi. this evelopment resulted in migration of the labour to the City.The average rainfall is 509.15mm, South-West mansoon begins int the month of June and continues up to Setember. Geography and Culture
Gangavathi is located at 15.43°N 76.53°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 406 m (1332 ft).
Gangavathi is an important commercial centre. Since it is situated close to Tungabhadra dam. Hampi, a well known UNESCO World Heritage Site is 14 km from the town. Other places of historical importance include Anegundi, Kanakagiri, and Hemagudda. Gangavathi was one many talukas in Raichur District. When Koppal district was carved out of Raichur District, Gangavathi became part of Koppal district. Gangavathi is famous for rice cultivation, and considered the rice bowl of Karnataka.[2] It is famous for rice milling industry.Many films have been shot in Gangavathi like China Gate, Amaanat, Nayak.
Gangavathi has also received equal amount of popularity in producing sugar. Gangavathi Sugar Limited was once second biggest sugar plant in Asia.[citation needed] GSL (Gangavathi Sugar Limited) is located at Pragathinagar village which is 10 km away from Gangavathi city on the state high way to Raichur.
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[3] Gangavathi had a population of 93,249. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Gangavathi has an average literacy rate of 57%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 67%, and female literacy is 48%. In Gangavathi, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age(child).

This is one and only multi color printing industry in Koppal, Bellary and Raichur districts. This industry have all printing, media solutions and tie upped with reputed companies like Jindal steels limited, MSPL (Baldota), Kalyani Steels limited etc.
